Press Statement
Buhari should withdraw all military men from Oporoza
The Concerned Ijaw Transformation Ambassadors (CITA) strongly condemns the ongoing raiding of Oporoza community in Gbaramatu Kingdom. As a result of the raid, thousands have been displaced, many of whom are little children. Some have even got drowned in their attempt to scamper as the soldiers invaded the community in a commando like fashion.
Buhari must be reminded that a year ago he swore to protect the constitution. The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides in Section 14 (2) (b) that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government. But from the look of things it is crystal clear that the security and welfare of the Ijaw people does not matter to his administration. Does he want to mark his one year in office by launching a massacre against the Ijaw people?
As peaceful and law abiding citizens who have always been the victims of environmental pollution and serial genocide by successive Nigerian governments, we will not fold our hands this time and watch President Buhari carry out another onslaught against the Ijaw people.
While we will not resolve to carry arms against the Nigerian government, we will use any other means constitutional to fight against this hatred and ethnic cleansing the Ijaw people who are but leaving in a state of dejected milieu despite the colossal contribution of the region to the nation's economy.
Thus, the Federal Government should as a matter of urgency withdraw its military troops from Oporoza.
Signed:
Amb. Arerebo Salaco Yerinmene Peters
Executive President, CITA.
Comr. Obiri Jonathan
Spokesman, CITA.
